Gwadar Port handled far more cargo in 2026 than in 2025, but much of the rise came from shippers rerouting around the Strait of Hormuz, which may not last. For a property buyer, port activity is a reason to look closely at Gwadar, not a promise that prices will rise.
What 2025 Looked Like
Geo News reported that Gwadar Port processed around 8,300 containers in 2025, with fewer than 20 vessels docking during the year.
What Changed in 2026
ProPakistani reported a sharp rise in cargo in April 2026 as instability around the Strait of Hormuz pushed shipping operators to reroute vessels across the Arabian Sea. The News reported that four transshipment vessels arrived in April. On 24 May 2026 the government said the port had berthed and handled a vessel carrying more than 53,000 tonnes, which ARY News reported had left Bayuquan in China bound for Sohar in Oman before diverting to Gwadar. Profit reported on 20 July 2026 that another transhipment vessel brought more than 53,000 tonnes of steel despite regional tensions.
Incentives Announced
The government said berthing fees for container vessels and for ships carrying transit or transshipment cargo were cut by 25 percent. It said charges on international transshipment container cargo were cut by 40 percent and on transit container cargo by 31 percent, and that general cargo gets one month of free storage against five days at other national ports.
The Limits
The Friday Times argued in May 2026 that vessels with the 13 to 14 metre draft used on standard global container services cannot dock at Gwadar, so it cannot yet act as a regional hub. Geo News reported that a vessel with a 12.8 metre draft was berthed successfully. The Friday Times also said the Strait of Hormuz had been effectively closed since late February, so some of the extra traffic depends on that disruption. Conditions may have changed since those reports.
What It Means for Buyers
Port cargo does not turn into land prices on its own. Ask for recent completed transfers in the block you are considering, not asking prices, and be careful with any seller who prices a plot on port proximity without telling you the distance. Our guides to land near Gwadar Port, what moves resale value and Gwadar property rates by area explain how to check a price.
