Lahore’s smog season starts in October and runs into January, and air quality varies by area and by day. Before you buy or rent, visit during the season and ask what the society has done about trees, parks and green belts.

How Bad It Gets

Reuters footage reported by Atlas News gave an AQI of 412 at about 7 am on 25 October 2025, ranking Lahore the most polluted major city on IQAir that morning. Daily Times reported a city AQI of 603 on 30 October 2025, with station readings of 1,059 in Allama Iqbal Town, 1,021 in DHA and 818 on Sanda Road. IQAir treats readings above 300 as hazardous, according to The News. Station readings differ widely, so do not rank societies on a single reading.

What Improved

Business Recorder reported in November 2025 that the Punjab government said Lahore’s average AQI fell from 565.2 in November 2024 to 259.6 in November 2025. That is a government claim based on US monitoring data. Daily Times reported on 3 January 2026 that the AQI dropped to 110 after higher humidity cleared smog particles. We did not find season data for 2026 yet.

What Societies Are Asked to Do

Zameen.com reported that LDA asked sponsors of private housing schemes to complete parks and green belts, under Section 15 of the LDA Private Housing Scheme Rules 2014. Business Recorder reported that the government’s Lungs of Lahore project along the Ravi belt was planting 400,000 trees. Open space also features in the Master Plan 2050 proposals, which are not yet in force, as we explain in Lahore Master Plan 2050.

What to Check Before You Buy or Rent

Visit between late October and December, at different times of day, and check the live AQI for that area on IQAir. Ask whether the society’s parks and green belts are built or only drawn on the map. Look at road dust and construction around the plot, and ask residents what winter is like. For a rental, check that windows seal well and ask who pays for air purifiers, because they are not part of the sale price or the rent.
